What Are Injectable Fillers?
Fillers can be injected underneath the skin to “fill” in wrinkles. These fillers can be used to fill in smile lines, plump up lips, and even fill in the troughs under the lower eyelids. Different fillers last for different lengths of time, anywhere from 6 months to over a year depending on the filler used and the location where it is injected. Unlike Houston BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.
Why Injectable Fillers?
Injectables are a quick, simple way to enhance your appearance with no downtime. Unlike surgical procedures such as facelift or eyelid surgery near Houston, fillers can rejuvenate your appearance while you are on your lunch hour. There are a variety of different injectables fillers that are used specific in areas around the face and neck.
What Are the Different Types of Fillers?
Fillers can be classified by their longevity. The categories below are arranged in terms of increasing longevity.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound in the body. It is the same compound that lubricating joint fluid is made of as well as connective tissues. This same compound is synthesized in the lab, purified, and can be injected. Examples of products in this category include Restylane and JUVÉDERM®.
These filler agents can be injected into the smile lines, lips, and the troughs under the lower eyelid. On average, this category of filler agents lasts approximately 6 to 7 months. However, in certain areas, Restylane and JUVÉDERM can last upwards of 8 months.
Cross-Linked Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
These compounds are also made of hyaluronic acid. However, they are modified to be thicker and last longer. Examples of fillers in this category include Perlane® and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus. Because these fillers are thicker, they can only be used in thicker tissues like smile lines and lips. On average, Perlane and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus last approximately 9 to 10 months.
Examples of products in this category include RADIESSE, Artefill®, and Sculptra®. Some of these injectables can last longer than 2 years.
RADIESSE is a semi-permanent filler composed of microscopic particles of hydroxyapatite crystals, a naturally occurring chemical in the body. This filler can be injected into the smile lines, the creases in front of the jowls, and can sometimes be used to add a little volume to the chin. RADIESSE can also be used on the back surfaces of the hands to add volume and camouflage prominent tendons and veins. RADIESSE can last anywhere from 12-15 months.
Artefill is a new injectable filler that is made of PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate) beads, and is the only completely permanent filler available on the market. This permanent filler is synthesized in the lab and does not degrade over time. The injected PMMA beads act as a building block to trigger the growth of new collagen. The growth of collagen actually creates volume and fills in wrinkles. Artefill works well for smile lines, the lines in front of the jowls and very deep forehead lines.
Sculptra is a large area filler made of an ingredient similar to absorbable sutures. This chemical (polylactic acid) triggers the growth of new collagen. Therefore, results from Sculptra can take weeks to take effect. Sculptra is very useful in patients that need large amounts of volume in the temple area or in the cheeks. The results from Sculptra can last more than 2 years.
About Fat Transfer
Fat grafting is another way to fill facial features, and it uses the patient’s own fat! The fat used for fat transfer is extracted from parts of your body like the abdomen or thighs and injected into another area that requires plumping. Since the fat is your own, a significant portion of the fat becomes permanent, and therefore it eliminates the need for constant re-injections, as with other materials.
Why Dr. Athré?

Many injectors are aestheticians and nurses with little experience in injecting and tailoring each injection for the patient. At Athré Facial Plastics, Dr. Athré injects every single patient himself. “There is a difference between injecting every patient the same way, and customizing the pattern for the patient’s individual needs. My experience with facial surgeries such as face lift in Houston allows me to comprehensively analyze a patient’s face, determine their individual needs, and manipulate the injections to their individual needs,” says Dr. Athré. Also, Dr. Athré’s gentle methods, minimize bruising and swelling, allowing patients to return to work or social events immediately after their treatments.
