Basic Anatomy of the Nose
The nose is composed of skin, bone and cartilage. Five cartilaginous structures and the nasal bones come together to form the structure of the nose. Skin and soft tissue then drape over this triangular structure. Rhinoplasty involves manipulating the bony, cartilaginous, and soft tissue elements to improve breathing, straighten the nose and air passages, and enhance the aesthetic appearance of the nose.
About the Nose
Your nose is the most defining feature of your face and one of the first things people notice about you. The nose can be improved by increasing or decreasing the overall size, removing an unwanted hump, changing the shape of the tip, narrowing the bridge, narrowing the width of the nostrils, or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty can improve the balance between the nose and the rest of the face.
Nonsurgical treatments will not enhance or correct the shape or function of the nose. Since the nose projects from the face, it is exposed to sunlight. Over a lifetime of sun exposure, the skin of the nose can show signs of significant aging such as uneven texture and age spots, large pores, roughness, and an overall decrease in elasticity. A medical grade sunblock is key in preventing such damage, while an individualized medical skin care regimen can improve the appearance of skin on the nose.
Rhinoplasty can be performed via an open approach or via a closed approach. The two approaches differ in the location of the incisions. The open approach involves an incision across the columella of the nose, the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. The advantage of this approach is that it allows complete visualization of all of the bony and cartilaginous structures of the nose.
The closed approach involves several incisions that are concealed within the nose. This approach is useful for minor adjustments to nasal structure. The disadvantage to this approach is that Dr. Athré’s ability to visualize the entire surgical area is drastically reduced. The choice between the type of approach is based on the complexity of the repair and enhancement required.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most demanding surgical procedures and is one of specialties undertaken at Athré Surgical Associates. Successful rhinoplasty requires the surgeon to take into account every variable including:
- Skin color
- Skin texture
- Overall facial shape
- Height of the patient
- A patient’s aesthetic sense
- Facial bone structure
All of these considerations, a complete physical exam, and a consultation to discuss the patient’s desires and aesthetic norms are all part of the initial consultation. If you’re considering rhinoplasty, or if you are unhappy with the nose surgery results you have achieved from another surgeon and are considering revision rhinoplasty near Houston, you’ll want to know how the surgery is performed and how it can improve your looks, self-confidence, or health. During a consultation, Dr. Athré can provide answers to many of the questions you may have.
