Considering Body Contouring? Here’s What You Should Know

Are you looking for a non-invasive, quick way to get rid of stubborn excess fat? Do you want to smooth and tighten certain areas of your body that diet and exercise just can’t properly tone? You might be a good candidate for non-surgical body contouring.

What is Body Contouring?

Body contouring, sometimes called body sculpting, is a procedure that aims to eliminate fat and tighten skin. It reshapes the body through getting rid of extra skin, eliminating excess fat, and contouring the area.

Non-surgical body sculpting is referred to as lipolysis, and can include injections, intense temperature, laser, or radio frequency methods to destroy fat cells.

Surgical body contouring concerns liposuction, tummy tucks, and other surgical lifts that actually remove the excess fat. For this article, we’ll be discussing nonsurgical body contouring, a.k.a lipolysis.

Types of Non-surgical Body Contouring

Cryolipolysis uses intensely cold temperatures to get rid of fat cells. The process of freezing fat cells reduces the deposits in targeted areas of the body. One of the most common types of cryolipolysis is CoolSculpting®.

Injection Lipolysis

When you opt for injection lipolysis, your doctor will inject deoxycholic acid into the body to target and eliminate your unwanted fat cells to achieve your ideal body shape in that area.

Laser Lipolysis

During laser lipolysis, like Zerona®, a doctor will deliver laser energy to the targeted area through an applicator in order to heat and disrupt the unwanted fat cells.

Radiofrequency Lipolysis

Radiofrequency lipolysis uses radio frequency and ultrasound technology to tighten the skin, grow new collagen, tighten the area, and reduce subcutaneous fat cells.

Athré Facial Plastics offers the BTL Exilis Ultra™ radiofrequency treatment. BTL Exilis Ultra is non-invasive and uses heat to cause controlled micro-injuries and encourage collagen production to firm up the area. It also targets and eliminates underlying fat.

What Areas Can You Get Body Contouring?

This treatment can eliminate fat and reshape most areas of the body and in smaller amounts on the face. Some of the most common areas that patients want to focus on include:

  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Belly
  • Back
  • Neck and chin
  • Forehead
  • Lower eyelids and cheeks
  • Décolleté and chest area

Body Contouring Process

Lipolysis is quick and pain-free, but patients might feel hot or flushed during the procedure. Some patients even describe the experience as feeling like a warm massage. The entire procedure for more non-surgical body sculpting treatments takes about 30 minutes depending on the area of the body being treated.

Post-Body Contouring Side Effects

After a non-surgical body sculpting session, you’ll be able to go home from the office or clinic right away and return to your day normally. You my experience some common side effects, including:

  • Hives
  • Rash
  • Swelling
  • Tender skin
  • Red skin
  • Pain or soreness

In order to speed up healing and maintain the best results, patients should use ice packs to reduce swelling and stiffness, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and avoid strenuous exercise or intense heat (such as a sauna, spa, or hot bath).

Body Contouring Results

Although most people will see some results immediately, patients should contact their doctor to schedule a follow-up appointment within the next month or so.

If you’re opting for radiofrequency lipolysis, such as BTL Exilis Ultra, Dr. Athré recommends three to four treatments for optimal results. New collagen forms gradually and can take a bit of time before fully revitalizing the loose skin.

However, once you achieve your desired look, non-surgical body sculpting treatments can last a significant amount of time, in some cases up to 10 years or more.
