Stroll down the skin products isle of any drug store or discount department store and you will find hundreds or even thousands of  lotions, ointments and creams for wrinkles that all promise to reduce the appearance of wrinkles instantly and painlessly! Some of them even promise to prevent wrinkling completely.

Turn on your television set, and you’re bombarded with young girls who are all of 12 years old telling you how whatever product they’re advertising will make your skin as fresh, dewy, and wrinkle-free as theirs. Horsefeathers!

It’s just a fact! Aging happens as long as you are living, and with aging comes wrinkles. There are anti-wrinkle products that can help your skin look better temporarily, but the effects will not last. You aren’t going to live to be 100 and die with a fresh and unwrinkled face!

All of the over-the-counter anti-wrinkle creams, ointments, lotions, etc. contain one of more of the these ingredients:

Retinol: This was the first antioxidant to be widely used in nonprescription. It’s a vitamin A compound.

Hydroxy acids: These are synthetic versions of fruit acids. They are defoliants and are meant to remove dead skin and encourage the body to produce new skin.

Coenzyme Q10: This is a nutrient that promotes energy production in cells.

Copper peptides: Copper is an element that is present in every cell of the body. Copper is combined with proteins called peptides, and this combination is what is sometimes applied to the skin.

Kinetin: Kinetin factors into the growth of plants. It is supposed to help the skin retain moisture.

Tea extracts: Extracts from green tea, black tea, and oolong tea contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The determining factor of how well any of the over-the-counter skin ointments, lotions and creams for wrinkles work, depends upon the quantity of the ingredients listed above that are contained in the products. Products that contain large quantities of these ingredients might provide very small improvements to the skin if used often enough and long enough.
