How should we take care of our skin?

We are flooded with options on TV promising miracle results.  Every time we see a display in the mall we see beautiful models touting the latest new night cream or eye serum.  Most of us have a drawer full of moisturizers, creams, lotions promising clear, radiant screens.

What works?  What doesn’t?  What’s hype?  What’s fluff?

Since the face is one of the most exposed areas of the body, the sun, gravity, and the natural aging process all take their toll on facial skin. All skin is made up of many different types of proteins, the most important being elastin and collagen. These two proteins form a matrix to give skin its volume, texture, and elasticity.

Skincare treatments in the Houston area are so important because as aging occurs, collagen and elastin are broken down at a faster rate than they are re-made. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, multiple previous sunburns, and smoking speed up the breakdown of elastin and collagen, causing premature aging. Signs of premature aging include uneven texture, roughness, loss of volume, fine and coarse wrinkles, increased pore size, and changes in a tone such as age spots.

So what can be done?

The first step in determining a skincare regimen is determining what problems are to address.  Skincare regimens can be used to grow collagen, treat acne, remove age spots, remove scars, minimize fine lines, and even thicken and tighten skin.  Once the problem areas are determined, a detailed, customized treatment plan is made for the client.
