Oily skin is an issue for many of us, and why some people’s skin is oilier than others can seem like a frustrating mystery. Oily skin attracts more dirt and is more prone to acne than normal, or dry skin. It has a shiny look and can be troublesome for evenly applying makeup. So is there anything individuals with oily skin can do to eliminate this problem? Let’s find out.
Our skin produces sebum, which is mostly made of lipids. The sebum protects us from microbial infections and keeps our skin from drying out. Along with sebum, we also produce sweat. Our skin also sheds dead skin cells. These things combine to form a layer on the skin. Individuals with oily skin produce more sebum that shows up in this layer. Hormones mainly activate the sebum production, and some of us are genetically conditioned to produce more oils.
The most common way to manage oily skin is to use oil-free skin products. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle oil-free cleanser and use oil-absorbing blotting papers. Astringents and toners will help you manage your oily skin, but make sure you still moisturize or your skin will dry out in an unhealthy way.
As far as cosmetics go, look for mattifying and powder-based products. Just remember you’re lucky—skin that produces more sebum may get fewer wrinkles as the skin ages.
