Wrinkle Prevention With Antioxidants

Many individuals notice more and more fine lines and wrinkles appearing on their face as they get older. As we age, our skin loses collagen, which is what causes this. Molecules called free radicals contribute to this loss of collagen in our skin. UV rays found in sunlight, harmful carcinogens in cigarette smoke, and pollution are full of these wrinkle-causing free radicals.

That’s not to say that avoiding free radicals all together is advisable, or even possible, but avoiding as many as we can by eliminating unhealthy lifestyle habits can help. Something that can help prevent or delay some types of skin cell damage is consuming antioxidants.

Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation, and products chock-full of antioxidants are  the natural enemies of free radicals. Increasing our consumption of foods rich in antioxidants will help fight the free radicals that cause skin damage and counteract the loss of collagen, elasticity, and firmness of the skin — thereby preventing wrinkles.

The following are a few foods you can include in your diet to help prevent wrinkles.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes have the advantage of not only being high in antioxidants, but also being high in lycopene. Lycopene has been proven to be effective in the prevention of some cancers.

Red Peppers

Red peppers are delicious — and have high amounts of antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and bioflavonoids. These are known to help moisturize and repair damaged skin.

Tip: All red and dark orange-colored vegetables, such as beets and carrots, are great wrinkle fighters.

Kale

Kale is also rich in antioxidants, and is an excellent source of iron. Iron is effective in bringing blood to the skin, which will help your skin look healthy and repair itself quicker. Kale is also rich in Vitamin A, which helps to prevent premature aging effects.

Blueberries

Considered a power-food, blueberries are very high in antioxidants. Drop some blueberries into your morning smoothie and watch the helpful effects take place.

Salmon

Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to fight inflammation and to be a great skin moisturizer.

Add these delicious foods rich in antioxidants to your healthy diet and take positive steps toward preventing unsightly wrinkles and fine lines on your face. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and to keep hydrated as well!
