Five Very Important Things to Know about Revision Rhinoplasty
- Revision rhinoplasty is more complex than primary (first-time) rhinoplasty. Some of the reasons for this include: scar tissue, loss of cartilage, loss of support, and potential foreign materials in the nose. All of this increases the complexity of future nose surgery. Furthermore, the psychological profile of the patient also increases the complexity of the surgery as a whole. Most patients requesting revision rhinoplasty have increased anxiety and nervousness regarding revision surgery and expectations due to their primary surgery mishap.
- Choosing a surgeon experienced in revision rhinoplasty is very important. Being that revision rhinoplasty is more difficult that primary rhinoplasty, the surgeon you choose must have significant experience in revision rhinoplasty, and all associated techniques required for a successful outcome.
- Revision surgery cannot be performed until the the first surgery has healed. After any type of surgery, there is a healing period which involves swelling and scarring. These processes must reach certain homeostasis before thinking about another surgery or intervention.
- The risks associated with revision surgery are approximately the same as primary surgery. Additional risks with revision surgery derive from additional procedures such as rib harvest or fascia harvest. Recovery is relatively the same after revision surgery with most patients being able to return to work within 1 week!
- Every aspect of a botched nose may not be able to be corrected. A revision rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Athre usually takes about 1.5 hours to completely go over what can be corrected and to delineate a realistic outcome from your surgery!
