Microdermabrasion is a great, non-invasive skin care treatment for those who want to walk away with new, glowing, smooth skin. The rotating facial instrument used by an aesthetician or doctor removes the top layer of damaged skin, eliminating excess oil, dirt, and debris, and even reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Here are some things to look out for and some helpful products to use after your microdermabrasion session.
What to Expect After Your Procedure
After your first microdermabrasion skin care appointment, make sure you listen and follow your doctor’s post-care instructions. Since you’re leaving the office with a brand new layer of skin, protecting your face is incredibly important to a healthy and quick healing process. You may experience red, slightly heated skin right after your appointment, which is normal, and small breakouts are also common (although temporary).

Moisturize
After your microdermabrasion appointment, your number one concern should be moisturizing. Your skin is healing from a traumatic experience, and could feel dry or flaky, so a soothing, hydrating moisturizer is your best friend and will help you recover.
Recommended products:
Avoid Intense Active Ingredients
Since your face is recovering from a medical-grade exfoliation, it may be extra sensitive to products you would consider a part of your normal routine. Avoid products with active ingredients such as AHAs/BHAs (alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids), peroxide, vitamin C, and retinol for the next week or so after your appointment.

Wear Sunscreen
Protect your face from the harsh effects of UV-rays—this brand new skin is going to be extra vulnerable to the sun. Avoid direct sun exposure, and make sure you are generously applying facial sunscreen day after day.
Recommended products:
Eliminate Caffeine and Alcohol
If you are looking for a swift healing process, you should consider eliminating caffeine and alcohol. These things thin the blood which can prolong the process, so wait a few days before you have a glass of wine or morning cup of coffee.

Avoid Activities That Cause Sweat
After your appointment and for the next couple of days, you should avoid heavy workouts or other activities that might cause you to sweat. Excessive sweating immediately after a microdermabrasion treatment can cause irritation and stinging.
