What is an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Raghu Athré is one of the top rhinoplasty surgeons in the US. This video explains the question, “What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

Have you ever noticed that Hispanic people look different from Caucasian people who look different from Indian people who look different from Persian people? All of us have an ethnic heritage, and, as a result, have certain facial characteristics that identify us. Our nose frequently is that identifying characteristic. Many times, the nose can be out of balance with other facial features. Patients of various ethnicities don’t ask to change their ethnicity. They still want to look like themselves. However, they may wish to modify small characteristics that will bring their nose into proportion with the rest of their face–though still allowing them to look like themselves. This is the challenge of ethnic rhinoplasty, and it is one of the specialties of Athré Facial Aesthetics.

If there is one thing that Athre Facial Plastics is known for, it is ethnic rhinoplasty. Dr. Athré specializes in rhinoplasty procedures for Hispanic, Persian, Asian, and African-American patients.

Hi, I’m Dr.

Raghu Athre with Athre Facial Aesthetics,

Houston’s premier practice for rhinoplasty.

Today’s topic is going to be ethnic rhinoplasty.

What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

In essence, rhinoplasty was brought

to the United States from Germany in the early part of the 20th century.

There was a lot of significant studies that was performed shortly after modern

rhinoplasty took its beginnings in order to determine

anthropological norms for curvature, projection, rotation, so on and so forth.

However, the models for all of this data were primarily Caucasian females.

Well, over the many decades afterwards, we have suddenly decided

that there are lots of different types of people in this world.

For example, people in the Middle Eastern quadrant, people from Lebanon, Iran,

so on and so forth, have very significant characteristics in their face

that differentiate them from a Caucasian population.

Similarly, people from Latin America have

certain characteristics that differentiate them from the Caucasian population.

Based on this information,

ethnic rhinoplasty is a subset of rhinoplasty dedicated

to giving natural results for patients that are not of Caucasian descent.

For example, a patient from Vietnam may want a stronger

bridge with a more Caucasian-appearing nose.

However, it is important to consider what

she looks like, her facial characteristics,

and so forth to determine the amount of projection you’re going to add here,

the amount of projection and tip definition that you may add in the tip

region, to still achieve a harmonious and natural appearing result and still

find something that is esthetically pleasing for the patient.

This is where ethnic rhinoplasty comes in.

If you are seeking an ethnic rhinoplasty, please make sure you look out

for a surgeon who is experienced in doing ethnic rhinoplasty.

This means taking into account all

of the cultural norms that may be present, some of the anatomic considerations.

For example, African-American noses have

slight different amounts of cartilage and strength of cartilage.

All of these slight nuances is what

determines a very, very harmonious and appropriate result in the patient’s eye.
