Jowls: Causes and Treatments

Loose, sagging skin in the chin and jawline areas, commonly referred to as jowls, are one of the most common age-related skin concerns among both men and women. Fortunately, there are both surgical and nonsurgical jowl treatments that can effectively address facial sagging and restore a more youthful appearance.

What Causes Jowls?

A number of factors can contribute to the appearance of jowls, though the most common is age. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, two important proteins responsible for giving our skin youthful structure and elasticity. As these protein levels drop with age, the skin can begin to droop or sag and is unable to “snap” back into place.

Additionally, certain lifestyle factors can increase the likelihood that jowls could develop. These include accumulated sun exposure, smoking and significant weight fluctuations.

How Do You Get Rid of Sagging Jowls?

While there are some topical skincare products that claim to tighten jowls, in-office treatments are the most effective way to get rid of sagging jowls. These include:

  • Injectable fillers can “fill in” loose skin, smoothing away the appearance of jowls.
  • BOTOX® can be used to “lift” mild jowls and treat neck bands.
  • Facelifts and/or neck lifts can address moderate to severe facial sagging in the lower portion of your face and neck.
  • Chin augmentation can add depth to your jawline, hiding sagging skin in the chin and neck areas.

In some cases, a combination of two or more jowl treatment options can yield the best results. To create a customized jowl treatment plan, schedule a consultation with Dr. Athré by calling our Houston office at 281-557-3223 or get in touch online.
