What Causes Eyelids to Droop Differently?

While everyone has some level of natural asymmetry in their facial features, more pronounced asymmetry in features like eyelids can have a negative effect on one’s self-confidence. Uneven eyelids may be particularly problematic for adults who develop this type of facial asymmetry later in life. Here, we break down some of the most common causes of asymmetrical eyelids and how to correct them.

Causes of Uneven Eyelids

Uneven eyelids can be the result of several factors, including:

  • Age – The most common cause of asymmetrical eyelids is the natural aging process, which can cause drooping eyelids, weakened facial muscles, and uneven fat distribution in the face.
  • Genetics – Genetics can influence facial asymmetry and may be present from birth or develop over time due to aging and lifestyle habits.
  • Trauma or injury – Injuries that affect the nerves or muscles in your face can lead to uneven eyelids.
  • Motor tics – People who experience motor tics – short, involuntary movements of facial features   – may experience eyelid asymmetry if one side of the face is more affected.

How to Correct Asymmetrical Eyelids

Nonsurgical treatments such as injectable fillers and/or BOTOX® can help correct mildly asymmetrical eyelids and create a more even appearance. While injectables are temporary, they often last a year or more and don’t require downtime.

Surgical options such as an eyelid lift, also called blepharoplasty, or a brow lift may be the most effective solution for moderate to severe facial asymmetry. Surgical facial rejuvenation procedures can produce dramatic and longer-lasting results than nonsurgical options.
